Live Selling 101: How to Get Started with Your First TikTok LIVE

Live selling looks simple from the outside. Go live. Show a product. Hope people buy.

In reality, your first livestream works when you do three things well:

  1. Build trust fast

  2. Demonstrate clearly

  3. Make it easy to decide

That’s it.

This is the beginner’s guide I wish more people had before they ever hit “Go LIVE”, especially on TikTok Shop where the difference between “views” and “sales” is structure.

Start with this: TikTok LIVE vs TikTok Shop LIVE

If your goal is revenue, you want to think in TikTok Shop LIVE terms, not just “going live”.

TikTok Shop LIVE means:

  • viewers can click and buy while they watch

  • your job is to guide them from curiosity to confidence, quickly

TikTok LIVE selling isn’t about talking more. It’s about reducing hesitation.

Step 1: Choose the right products for your first LIVE

The biggest beginner mistake is bringing too much choice.

Start with 2 to 4 LIVE-friendly products:

  • easy to demonstrate on camera

  • visually obvious (viewers “get it” fast)

  • simple to choose (low decision stress)

  • priced to suit impulse buying behaviour

If you’re selling a service (coaching/training), the rule is the same:

  • one “easy yes” offer

  • one “main offer”

  • one “premium offer”

When the choice is clear, the buyer relaxes.

Step 2: Plan your show flow so you don’t waffle

You don’t need a word-for-word script, but you will need a repeatable structure.

Use this loop, and repeat it throughout your LIVE:

  1. Hook: Who it’s for + why stay

  2. Demo: Show proof, don’t describe

  3. Benefit: Make it about their outcome

  4. Social proof: Reviews, results, “best seller”, buyer stories

  5. Call To Action: Tell them exactly what to do

  6. Objections: Answer the silent doubts out loud

  7. Reset: Quick recap for new joiners

Live selling doesn’t convert just because you said it once. You need to loop it calmly in order to convert.

Step 3: Nail the first 30 seconds (this is where most Lives fail)

A lot of Lives begin with: “Hi everyone, welcome in…”

It’s friendly, but it’s not a hook.

Try this instead:

  • “If you struggle with [problem], you’re in the right LIVE.”

  • “I’m going to show you the fix in the next 60 seconds.”

  • “Tap the pinned product, I’m demonstrating it now.”

And that’s how you turn a scroller into a stayer.

Step 4: Set up your equipment so you look credible

You don’t need a full-on studio, a home set-up is fine, but you do need to be clear. This means good audio, good video and good lighting.

Minimum setup:

  • stable phone mount (MRGLAS for suction mount with mag attachment)

  • good ring light (for a basic rig, try the EOTO Light or this for a pro set-up NEEWER Professional)

  • clear audio (I recommend the Boya Mini 2)

  • solid internet with good upload speed

Your viewer decides if they trust you in seconds. Production is part of that decision.

(NOTE: Some links are affiliate links. If you buy through them, I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you.)

Step 5: Engage viewers like a host, not a broadcaster

LIVE selling is a conversation with commercial direction.

Do this:

  • welcome new joiners by name

  • ask simple comment prompts (“Type 1 or 2”)

  • answer questions quickly

  • turn comments into mini demos

  • keep your loop moving

Don’t do this:

  • get lost in chat so you stop selling

  • talk for minutes without showing anything

  • assume viewers know what to do next

Engagement is valuable only when it creates momentum.

Step 6: Use urgency without pressure

People buy live because there’s a reason to decide now.

Good urgency is specific and believable:

  • “This bundle is live for the next 10 minutes.”

  • “First 20 orders get the bonus.”

  • “This price ends when we end.”

Bad urgency is vague panic: “Hurry guys!”
Trust drops fast when urgency feels forced.

Step 7: Close the sale and follow up properly

In your final minutes:

  • recap the best offer

  • restate the urgency window

  • repeat the Call To Action

  • remind them to follow

  • tell them when you’re going live next

People don’t always buy the first time they see you. Your job is to make returning easy.

Final thoughts

Your first LIVE doesn’t need to be perfect.

It needs to be structured.

If you can build trust, demonstrate clearly, and guide decision-making, you’ll do better than most people who have been going live for months.

And if you want support, you don’t have to guess. That’s what I do over at Live Sell Academy.
